KAJANG, 11th  January 2023 – To increase motivation about job opportunities for prison inmates, the Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) in collaboration with the Malaysian Prisons Department organised a career carnival, which was attended by 50 inmates undergoing drug rehabilitation treatment at Kajang Prison.

The program led by the Asian Center for Research on Drug Abuse (ACREDA), Faculty of Leadership and Management (FKP) USIM is one of the field trainings for the participants of the Certified Abuse Treatment Practitioner (CSATP) course (First Cohort), which was attended by 30 prison officers from all over Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak.

Head of the CSATP Project, Associate Prof. Dr. Amin Al Haadi Shafie, who is also FKP Lecturer said that, this course was conducted for three months from October 2022 until January 2023 to provide exposure related to career counselling to prison officers to help prison inmates prepare themselves mentally and physically for the world of work after being released later.

“We are targeting a total of 100 participants who will join this course. The second cohort will start in March and April 2023. The teaching team of this course consists of ACREDA researchers, lecturers from the communication, da’wah, and Islamic management programmes of the Faculty of Leadership and Management, as well as lecturers from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Various activities are conducted throughout the carnival, including a resume writing workshop, a career tools workshop, and a self-management workshop. Among the companies and agencies that participated in this carnival are the Social Security Organization (PERKESO), Auto Global Part Sdn Bhd, Second Life Human Resource and Juwara Resources & Trading Sdn Bhd.

Meanwhile, Dato’ Haji Nordin Haji Muhamad, the Commissioner General of Prisons, expressed gratitude to the employers who attended and offered jobs to the inmates of this prison in his opening speech, and hoped that all officers involved in this module could put what they had learned and practised into action when they returned to their respective departments.

Also present were ACREDA Research Fellow, Dato’ Dr. Abd Halim Mohd Husin and Associate Prof. Dr. Mahazan Abdul Mutalib@Talib, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Planning and Corporate Communications).
