PAHANG, July 22nd 2023 – The CEO@Faculty Program (CFP) is one of the initiatives carried out by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), which aims to strengthen collaborative relationships and increase engagement between industry and academia through the sharing of knowledge and expertise that can be utilized together.

Through the involvement of three staff members selected as fellows of this CFP program, namely Pn. Sharifah Nur Hafizah Tuan Sembak from the USIM Bursary stationed at Tabung Haji, Dr. Zatul-‘Iffah Abu Hasan, a Lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK) who is placed at the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM), and Dr. Mohd Hairulhisyam Ngatiman, FPSK Lecturer (also placed at Tabung Haji), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) has participated in the project called ‘Wake Up Tioman!’ This project is part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.

This group’s CSR project was one of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the CFP program, held in Kg Tekek, Pulau Tioman, from 20th to 22nd July 2023. The ‘Wake Up Tioman!’ program aimed to leverage the expertise and technology available at Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in collaboration with the community to address the impacts of climate change on Pulau Tioman through social innovation.

Under this program, three projects are carried out: The construction of a coral reef site from discarded glass bottles (Coral Restoration), Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) education for school students (Climate Change Warrior), and the transfer of technology for making compost from food waste (Waste Management). These projects focus on the application of several elements of social innovation with an entrepreneurial mindset, aiming to increase the competitiveness of the local population by creating a healthier coral reef ecosystem that functions as a breeding ground for marine species, raising awareness among the school community on the SDG concept through the establishment of a Climate Change Warrior group, as well as creating an environmentally friendly technology waste management system with the local community.

This project, supported by the Department of Higher Education, is also sponsored by the TM Foundation and Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) and has received full cooperation from the Multimedia University Foundation, Reef Check Malaysia, Tioman Development Authority, Pahang State Education Department, Rompin District Education Office, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tekek Tioman, Sekolah Kebangsaan Tekek Tioman, and Tioman Farmers Organization.
